Mashaba to Lead Lily Mine 7th Year Commemoration in Barberton

Sunday, 5 February 2023 will mark 7 years since the disastrous tragedy of the collapse of Lily Mine that led to the lamp room container trapping Yvonne Mnisi, Pretty Nkambule and Solomon Nyirenda inside.

To commemorate that fateful day, Herman Mashaba, ActionSA President will lead 2-day proceedings which will be marked by prayers and a site visit to the mine.

Proceedings will begin in earnest on Saturday 4 February when Mashaba will meet with the local Chief, followed by a two-hour prayer session with the Lily Mine families as well as affected miners.

Then on Commemoration Day, Sunday 5 February, we will begin with a morning walk to the site where the container collapsed at Lily Mine. The day will then culminate into an official commemoration event to take place at the families’ protest campsite where they have been living since 2019 with the aim to put pressure of mine management as well as the South African Government to have the container with their family members retrieved from underground.
