This morning, Public Safety MMC David Tembe presented the First Quarter Public Safety performance report for July – September 2022.
The report is measured against the 2022/2023 service delivery and budget implementation plan. Its publication is a commitment to transparency and ongoing feedback to our residents and the Gauteng public on the impact of our efforts to curb crime and ensure safety in the City.
At the outset of the multi-party administration, The City of Johannesburg identified seven (7) Priority areas that the service delivery budget and implementation plan aims to achieve. The Department of Public Safety is a custodian of priority 2: a safe and secure city.
During his address, MMC Tembe emphasised that it is clear the first quarter statistics that Operation BuyaMthetho is a phenomenon that the City desperately needs. Since its inception in 2018, the operation has aggressively worked to restore law and order, not only within all public safety departments, but across all City of Johannesburg Entities.
We have increased visibility through 22, 44 and 88 roadside checks happening simultaneously across strategic areas. We have unleashed additional Metro Police officers across all regions to aid in the fight against crime.
A total of 100 additional officers in Region D, Sowet received a total to 240 officers. The intention is to have an additional 600 more in the coming months. In Region B and E, we have deployed 100 additional officers respectively to eradicate criminal and unlawful activities in response to many complaints raised by community members about rising levels of crime.
Most recently, the Department beefed up deployment Eldorado Park. The scourge of drugs, guns and gangsterism remains a huge concern. Since the 15th of September:
- 16652 Vehicles were stopped.
- 783 Vehicles searched.
- 604 Persons searched.
- Over 30 drunk and driving arrests.
- Over 100 impounded vehicles.
- 1 Arrest linked to murder.
MMC David Tembe remains resolute in its commitment to make Joburg a safer business, work, and tourist environment.
ActionSA congratulates MMC Tembe and his team for this achievement in just under 11 months in office. We applaud the work of the Department and will continue to offer our support in its efforts to fight crime and restore law and order our the City.
