Outcomes of ActionSA’s First Leg of Insourcing Drive with Security Guards in the Capricorn Region

As part of ActionSA’s social justice programme to restore the dignity of workers through insourcing of security guards and cleaners by state entities, ActionSA Limpopo started its insourcing drive yesterday at the heart of Polokwane City with security guards assembling at the Central Business District.

During the engagements, the hard working men and women in uniform gave an account of the labour conditions and challenges they face.

As part of the grievances, the security guards included uncertain employment terms as there are no contracts in place, non-receipt of payslips as part of their employment, while others to do not receive consistent wage and salary payments. These are just a few of the list of complaints of unfair labour practices and exploitation they face.

When our President, Herman Mashaba led the charge in advocating for insourcing during his tenure as Executive Mayor of Johannesburg in 2017, 4,185 security guards and 1,879 cleaners were absorbed by the City. His vision for our people to create dignified working conditions allowed ordinary South Africans an opportunity to pursue a prosperous life for themselves, however they saw fit.

Mr Mashaba unashamedly went against tide and successfully implemented insourcing which went against the culture of exploitation that benefitted labour brokers and tenderpreneurs, whose main priority was the bottom line and not changing the material conditions of hard-working men and women. It is for this reason that we will push to implement insourcing in government departments and entities where feasible and practical when we take up seats in Parliament and Provincial legislature in 2024.

It will never be forgotten that under his leadership, thousands of men and women were uplifted and we pledge to continue in that trajectory when we formally welcome the Limpopo Security Forum to ActionSA in Thohoyandou on Saturday, 16 March 2024.
