Outsourcing Fails Hundreds of Hard-Working Security Guards and Cleaners Yet Again

I along with Gauteng Provincial leadership have spent the latter part of this morning engaging with the security guards and cleaners that have been camping outside the Department of Health for 9 days following their termination.

The disgruntled workers, represented South African Cleaners, Security and Allied Workers Union, were contracted to various private companies across Gauteng clinics hospitals. They submitted a memorandum demanding the absorption of all security and cleaning personnel into the department on the 22 March 2024.

Regrettably there has been no consultative engagement from the Department of Health. The employer has expressed that they are only willing to enter into engagements with the frustrated workers after the 26 April 2024.

ActionSA has always maintained that this ANC adopted policy has failed our people. For 30 years, the ANC government and Cosatu have exploited workers by not insourcing them, and by using municipalities and governments as coffers to enrich themselves instead of improving the lives of our people

ActionSA, a party committed to Social Justice, will continue to fight for the rights of workers across South Africa to improve their lives and create a more equal South Africa.

One will remember that during President Herman Mashaba’s tenure as Executive Mayor of Johannesburg in 2017, 4,185 security guards and 1,879 cleaners were absorbed by the City through his insourcing to be an integral part of the government entity. It is through this vision that hardworking men and women enjoyed the security of permanent employment, dignified working conditions with benefits and healthy retirement packages.

South Africa’s potential continues to go wasted under the current government and the rights of workers have been abused. The culture that has permeated the ruling party to use state recruitment processes as an electioneering tool to secure employment for cadres and those who swear allegiance to the party is unethical and robs many of the opportunity for gainful employment.

We urge the Department to take the workers into confidence and engage them on a way forward. Further to this, we demand that the department place a moratorium on the hiring of new workers until the matter with the current workers is laid to rest.
