President Ramaphosa’s Imbizo to failing eMalahleni Municipality is a electioneering using government resources

The Republic of South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa will host the Imbizo which aims to bring together leaders from all three spheres of government.

ActionSA views the President’s visit to eMalahleni Municipality as a ploy to campaign for the ANC using tax payers’ resources.

The 2021 Local government elections show a big decline in the ANC in the municipality, as the ANC got 35 seats and the opposition parties got 33 seats combined. This outcome shows that the ANC is faster-losing power in the municipality and the Province.

The Auditor General’s report outcome reflects that the municipality incurred fruitless expenditure and all its recommendations were not implemented.Former Mpumalanga co-operative governance and traditional affairs (Cogta) MEC, Busi Shiba, appointed Analytical Forensic Investigation Services (AFIS) in 2021 to investigate the municipality for maladministration, fraud, corruption or any other serious malpractices.

The forensic report painted a picture of massive corruption at the municipality and it is gathering dust and none of its recommendations have been implemented.

Challenges at eMalahleni Municipality:
– After operating for more than half a century, Highveld Steel, once a major employer, closed its doors in February 2016. This resulted into 1 800 permanent job lost for the community of eMalahleni.
– Coca-Cola Shanduka Beverages closed and thousands of people lost their jobs
– The municipality has four water treatment works, none of which meet national quality standards for potable water.
– It also has eight wastewater treatment works, all of which have been failing since 2020 to meet minimum compliance standards
– According to the Auditor General, the municipality was over R3 billion in debt as of June 30 last year
– The municipality owes Eskom over R5 billion for unpaid electricity. Whilst residents pays for electricity

ActionSA government will place the needs of residents first by setting minimum acceptable turnaround times for the resolution of service delivery issues, like pothole repairs and water leaks. We will do this by adopting service standards charters that hold officials and departments accountable for non-performance.

We are determined as ActionSA once we governed the municipality, we will place the service delivery needs of our residents at the centre of everything we do, and ensure that municipal budgets respond to the pressing needs of residents.

We view the visit by President of the the ruling ANC by using the Presidential Imbizo to campaign ahead of the 2024 elections.

ActionSA represents all South Africans who are determined to set our country free from the restraints of a broken political system and we call upon the loving people of our beloved nation behind the project of fixing South Africa come 29 May 2024.
