ActionSA will write to the Northern Cape Department of Education to urgently deal with claims made by parents of bribery within Kimberley District Education to get preferential treatment for placement in schools.
Failing which, ActionSA will approach acting Public Protector, Kholeka Gcaleka, to investigate allegations of bribery if the province refuses to act.
The Public Protector Act states: “The Public Protector shall, be competent to investigate, on his or her own initiative or on receipt of a complaint, any alleged- improper or unlawful enrichment, or receipt of any improper advantage, or promise of such enrichment or advantage, by a person as a result of an act or omission in the public administration or in connection with the affairs of government at any level or of a person performing a public function [among others].”
When ActionSA visited the Northern Cape Education Department’s district offices in Kimberley on Monday morning, parents claimed that pupil placements were allocated according to how quickly they could pay officials.
This was part of ActionSA’s national public engagement campaign ahead of the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on 9 February 2023 to speak to South Africans about the key issues facing the South Africa and find solutions to fix the country.
The public officials request for money amounts to bribery by public officials, which should speedily be investigated to ensure that corrupt officials are removed from the Northern Cape Education Department and pupils get access to the education they deserve.
Basic education is a right all South Africans enjoy according to the country’s constitution, and no public official should ever be allowed to diminish this right through bribery or bureaucracy.
ActionSA will maintain pressure on the Northern Cape Education Department to ensure that all pupils are placed as quick as possible to ensure that they do not miss out on crucial school hours.
ActionSA believes that the truest path toward economic empowerment and a more equal distribution of economic prosperity is through quality education for all, and we will do everything in our power to ensure that all South Africans have access to it.
