Stabilization of Power in Soshanguve a Major Breakthrough for New Tshwane Government

The completion of upgrades of the block DD and BB sub-stations ahead of schedule in Soshanguve is a major breakthrough for ActionSA Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya and the multi-party coalition government she leads.

Soshanguve represents constitutes a staggering 1.4% of the entire South African population and it represents so many places across South Africa in the way in which its growth in population has not been mirrored by a growth in electricity supply. Consequently, large parts of Soshanguve’s more established communities have suffered from multiple power outages a week with many lasting days at a time.

ActionSA conducted site visits to these sub-stations last year when it was investigating the poor and disparate state of service delivery in the capital city and the fact that the biggest township in Tshwane had gone so long without reliable electricity was a major factor in ActionSA’s considerations to reconstitute a new coalition government.

The work by the City will be completed ahead of time and has already completed the refurbishment of these sub-stations to provide additional capacity and a considerable 1.2km of electricity cables have been relaid to improve electricity reticulation in the area.

As a direct consequence of these measures, power outages have been almost eradicated in these communities and those that do take place are now resolved within a matter of hours.

The stabilisation of electricity supply to a community representing 1.4% of the country’s population is a major milestone for Dr Moya and her multi-party coalition government after years of neglect and failure. It is another achievement in a series of milestones that show a city that is moving forward for the first time in a long time.

ActionSA celebrates the achievements of Dr Moya and the multi-party coalition government she leads and expresses its appreciation for patience of the residents of Soshanguve in this long outstanding matter of basic service delivery.
