Tembisa Hospital Raids Step in the Right Direction as Lesufi Reveals Gauteng Waste Billions

While ActionSA welcomes a search and seizure operations by the Hawks at the Tembisa hospital following irregular contracts worth R850 million on Tuesday morning, we are concerned about the growing wasteful expenditure by the Gauteng provincial government.

We furthermore welcome the disciplinary action that will take place against suspended Tembisa Hospital CEO Ashley Mthunzi and provincial Chief Financial Officer Lerato Madyo, but it is troubling that it took more than 400 days following the murder of whistleblower Babita Deokaran for action to occur.

During a press briefing releasing a number of Special Investigating Unit (SIU) reports, Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi revealed that the provincial government had irregular expenditure of over R1.4 billion related to only four investigations.

That is money that could’ve been spent helping to pave roads, provide healthcare services and build houses for the most vulnerable in our province.

Lesufi said the province will be “cutting our loses” by exiting its R588 million investment at Anglo Ashanti hospital that was barely used, as well as building a new hospital in Kempton Park after years of the province failing to repair the existing hospital in the region. We must never forget that it was under Lesufi’s ANC government that the money was first spent on the Anglo Ashanti hospital treated just more than  a 100 patients, that Divers’ Licencing Centres became a hotbed for corruption, and that the alarm raised by whistleblowers went unheard.

ActionSA will continue to place pressure to ensure that accountability takes place against the officials involved that took scarce resources away from Gauteng residents and that corruption is eradicated.

It is only through ethical and accountable public leadership and rule of law – key values of ActionSA – that good governments can be installed that prioritise the needs of Gauteng residents.
