The R11 Billion Montrose Mega Project in Randfontein: a Monument of Government Failure and Mismanagement that is Becoming a Death Trap

The R11 billion Montrose Mega Project in Randfontein has become a tragic symbol of government neglect and mismanagement. Despite three oversight visits in 2024 – by ActionSA on 22 August, the NCOP on 18 September, and the Human Settlements Committee on 29 October — the Gauteng Provincial Government has taken no meaningful action to address the escalating humanitarian and infrastructural disaster at the site.

What should have been a flagship development is now a death trap.

Just last week, a child tragically lost their life after falling into an unsecured septic tank. On Monday, 05 May, a man was killed when part of the crumbling structure collapsed, burying him beneath the rubble. These heartbreaking incidents are the result of a failed and abandoned project riddled with incomplete units, unsafe structures, and rampant criminal activity.

The ANC-led government’s silence and inaction in the face of such preventable tragedies is indefensible. Communities in Randfontein are living in fear and despair, while the provincial executive continues to ignore urgent calls for intervention.

ActionSA demands the following immediate interventions:

– A comprehensive infrastructure development plan for Montrose must be presented publicly, with timelines and budget accountability.

– Enhanced security measures must be implemented urgently – including cordoning the site off, deploying police presence, and removing illegal miners – to prevent further loss of life and restore community safety.

The people of Gauteng deserve more than hollow promises and finger-pointing. They deserve a government that acts decisively to protect lives and deliver services.

ActionSA will not allow this R11 billion catastrophe to be swept under the rug. We remain committed to exposing corruption, demanding accountability, and restoring dignity to communities devastated by government failure.
