The Unresolved Murder of Dr Ezrom Mathumbu and the Inaction of SAPS

Note To Editor – These are remarks made by Thoko Mashiane in the Mpumalanga Legislature

Honourable Speaker, Honourable Premier, Members of the Legislature

It is with profound sorrow and growing frustration that ActionSA once again raises the unresolved murder of Dr Ezrom Mathumbu, who was brutally attacked and killed by multiple assailants while returning home from an ActionSA event on Wednesday, 05 March 2025

Despite the gravity of this politically motivated and violent act, the South African Police Service has, to date, provided neither meaningful updates to the family nor any indication that suspects have been identified, apprehended, or prosecuted. It has now been several months since this heinous crime was committed, yet the family of Dr Mathumbu and the broader ActionSA community continue to wait for justice, a justice that is long overdue.

This continued silence from SAPS is both inexcusable and unacceptable. It reflects a broader pattern in South Africa, where criminal elements are allowed to operate with impunity while victims and their families are left to suffer in silence. The failure to act decisively in this matter sends a dangerous message: that political violence, intimidation, and murder can take place without consequence.

Dr Mathumbu was not only a dedicated member of our movement, but a committed servant of his community and a champion of ethical leadership. His life was cut short by cowards who sought to silence integrity through violence, and yet no one has been held accountable. This is not just a tragedy for ActionSA, it is a failure of the criminal justice system, and a betrayal of the constitutional promise that all South Africans have a right to life, safety, and justice.

We demand that the South African Police Service urgently provide a public update on the status of this investigation and clarify whether any suspects have been identified or arrests made. We further call for a thorough, transparent investigation into this murder and for swift action to ensure that those responsible are brought before the law.

Honourable Speaker, we cannot allow South Africa to become a country where violence against political activists is met with silence. We owe it to Dr Mathumbu, his family, and the values he stood for to see that justice is done.

I thank you.
