TMPD Launches Mobile Alcohol Evidence Bus Ahead of the Festive Season

Today, 18 October 2023, Tshwane Community Safety and Roads and Transport launched the Mobile Alcohol Evidence Bus as part of Transport Month ahead of the December festive season.

Road carnage caused by intoxicated and reckless drivers has plagued the work of our law enforcement in Tshwane, caused loss of life and unthinkable pain and suffering to thousands of families.

According to a Road Transport Management Corporation (RMTC) 2021 State of Roads Safety Report, approximately 12500 lives were lost on South African roads that year. The same report also indicates that approximately 11000 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in Gauteng.

Tshwane Metro stands at the crossroads and is a corridor to three major travel destinations which cause the City to carry some of the highest traffic loads during the Easter, Winter, September and especially December school holidays. Travelers pass through the N1, N4 East to Mpumalanga and West to Bokone-Bophirima during these holidays, which often leaves our law enforcement inundated with ensuring proper traffic flow and the safety of all travelers.

To that end, the Alcohol Evidence Bus will therefore be a much-needed resource during this coming festive season to ensure that traffic law enforcement swiftly manage the number of people on our roads driving under the influence of alcohol.

As Party committed to the rule of law, ActionSA expresses its commitment and focus on road safety to all road users and cautions all road users to exercise caution and responsible behaviour while traveling on our toads during the festive season.

We also urge the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) to act in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa in dealing with cases that may be in contravention of the law where people’s human rights also need to be protected.
