Tshwane Automotive Special Economic Zone (TASEZ) Enables Job Opportunities Closer to Home

According to Tshwane Automotive Special Economic Zone (TASEZ)’s monthly progress report for November 2024, 5 538 construction jobs have been acquired, of which 3 702 are reportedly for residents of the City of Tshwane. Target Area I consists of 9 wards including Mamelodi, Silverton, Eersterust and Nellmapius, but the relevant ward councillors report lack of job opportunity by TASEZ for residents of the local community.

The City of Tshwane Section 79 Oversight Committee: Economic Development and Spatial Planning further notes that the incubation of black industrialists as per vision of TASEZ has not yet commenced. So as to improve oversight of TASEZ, the committee has referred the report back to the department with two further recommendations: that a clear breakdown be included per ward of the number of residents from Target Area 1 and 2 employed at TASEZ, and that the duration and status of their employment be clearly defined.

Phase 2 of TASEZ has commenced, with the application for township establishment of over 81 hectares of land. Phase 2 will include a TASEZ campus with housing, industrial node, truck staging, and mixed-used development of industry, residential, office and retail node. ActionSA supports the creation of job opportunities in the City of Tshwane, and is committed to ensuring that affordable housing is made available near places of economic opportunity, so as to build an inclusive and prosperous city for all its residents.

The City of Tshwane Municipality is a 33.3% shareholder of TASEZ, and is mandated to provide external engineering services for the progress and development of the special economic zone of Silverton, Pretoria, in partnership with Gauteng Department of Economic Development (GDED) and Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC). The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with TASEZ is to accommodate mainly automotive component manufacturers that will supply the Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA), and to-date, TASEZ has managed to attract 11 investors with an investment value of R5.63 billion for Phase 1 and Phase 1A.

ActionSA is excited about the potential of projects like TASEZ, to enable the transfer of technical skills at a local level, and to provide meaningful employment and dignity to more South Africans.
