The on-going burning of refuse waste at the Luipaardsvlei Landfill Site in Krugersdorp is of serious concern, as it releases toxic pollutants into the air, threatening the health and well-being of the local community.
Despite a public notice being issued by Mogale City Municipality on 29 August 2024, stating that refuse collection services had been suspended until further notice, the burning continues.
Poor waste management has resulted in increased occurrences of illegal dumping across the Municipality. This is a clear violation of National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and waste management laws, and needs urgent attention.
By law, “damage to the environment” includes any pollution or degradation, whether visible or not, that harms the environment and public health. According to NEMA, an environmental emergency is when waste-related incidents lead to serious danger or pollution.
Residents of Wentworth Park and surrounding area are directly affected by the on-going burning of refuse waste at the Luipaardsvlei Landfill Site; the inhaling of harmful substances poses severe risks.
Insufficient landfill sites in Mogale City are also leading to increased incidences of illegal dumping across the Municipality, threatening the health and well-being of the local community.
The illegal dumpsite in Munsieville, Ward 25, for example, is a hazard for the health of residents, especially children. Once a netball field for children, the land next to the illegal dumpsite has since become an informal squatter for undocumented foreigners, who sell building material on-site.
We urge the Mogale City Local Municipality to take immediate action in ensuring sufficient landfill sites are made available within the Municipality, and that they are professionally maintained.
ActionSA also calls for the prioritisation of restoration work at Luipaardsvlei Landfill Site, as promised by the Municipality. Residents of Wentworth Park and Munsieville deserve clean air and a safe environment.
