VBS Heist: ActionSA Welcomes More Arrests

ActionSA welcomes the arrest of former Lepelle-Nkumpi Municipal Manager, Thabo Ben Mothogoane, former CFO, Rosina Mangaka Ngoveni, and a Director of STG Financial Solutions, Thapelo Molathlegi.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Spokesperson, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, confirmed that the tree VBS corruption-accused charged with contravening the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) and corruption, allegedly invested R150 million of municipal funds into the mutual bank between November and December 2017— which was never repaid.

The three, implicated in the biggest bank heist in the history of this province, appeared in the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court early this week and were collectively granted bail that amounts to R90 000.

ActionSA welcome the steps taken by the criminal justice system to ensure that the three suspects, two former officials of a Limpopo municipality and one a commissioning agent for VBS Mutual Bank, who have looted monies invested by honest hardworking South Africans and vulnerable pensioners, are brought to book.

The Hawks Specialised Crimes Unit has officially confirmed to have made 32 arrests in relation to the unlawful investment into VBS, to date. This give us hope that we are nearing an era where bold criminals no longer live with impunity. It is our hope that officials who have pillaged the, now, defunct bank are living in constant fear knowing that the long arm of the law will soon catch up with them.

ActionSA, in solidarity with the hundreds of honest, hardworking and unsuspecting victims who fell prey to this pilfering, vows to be present when the suspects return to the dock on 23 January 2024 to ensure that no stone is left unturned in the prosecution of these crimes.

We will continue to declare corruption enemy number 1 until our people are no longer defrauded by trusted public servants or ravaged by crime.
