Victory for ActionSA as CoGTA MEC Grants Removal of Ward 101 Murder-Accused Councillor from eThekwini Council

ActionSA welcomes the long-anticipated approval from The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Ms Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi for the removal of murder-accused Mzimuni Ngiba, a former ward 101 councillor in the eThekwini Municipality.
Council Speaker, Thabani Nyawose confirmed this during today’s Council meeting that confirmation has been received from the MEC.
From the time of his arrest a year ago until May this year, Ngiba has earned an R541 681 of remuneration despite not performing his Council duties, and missing more than 3 consecutive Council meetings, which Speaker Nyawose failed to recognise.
Unfortunately, whether deliberately or not, due to the MEC dragging her feet to have approved Council resolution to remove Ngiba, he remained as councillor for a further 5 months while continuing to earn his remuneration wasting a further R225 700 for the Municipality.
Resulting from the collective failure of the Municipality and the MEC, the eThekwini has lost a total of R767 381 in fruitless and wasteful expenditure, paying a salary and benefits to this councillor.
Importantly, we await the IEC’s announcement for a by-election in ward 101.
