Worst Performing North-West Municipalities Should be Dissolved

ActionSA believes the eight municipalities which has been placed under administration by the Finance MEC Motlalepula Rosho should instead be dissolved, and fresh elections held to elect new municipal councils.

Placing the municipalities under administration will make no difference in service delivery in these failing municipalities as the North-West Provincial Government’s itself have faced administration. The only way to solve the current crisis in this province is if the incompetent councilors is removed.

In June 2021, Rosho announced the same measures in three municipalities and things went from bad to worse in these municipalities. Why would things be different now?

North-West is on record as the province with the worst run municipalities in the country and placing the Naledi, Dr. Ruth Mompati, Madibeng, Kgetleng Rivier, Ramotshere, Tswaing, Ditsobotla and Mahikeng municipalities under administration should not be used by the ANC as political grandstanding to serve different factions ahead of the 2024 elections at the expense service delivery.

Municipalities in the North-West are buckling under basic service delivery issues that include dilapidated infrastructure, roads, refuse removal, water challenges and mismanagement and underspending of allocated budget.

This while the North West provincial government returned over R1 billion rand in unspent conditional grants for 2021/2022 back to Treasury. This is money which could’ve been used to improve access to healthcare services, fixing roads and filling potholes, and improving overall service delivery.

ActionSA are committed to continue work on the ground to help transform the way our municipalities operate and will strive to make local government more efficient and effective at delivering services to residents once we win government in 2024.
