In light of growing concerns surrounding the National Dialogue, ActionSA has decided not to send a formal delegation from its national leadership. Instead, we will deploy two senior Members of Parliament on an observation brief to monitor and exercise oversight over the convention scheduled for this weekend.
ActionSA remains unconvinced that any of the concerns raised by key stakeholders, organisers and the broader public have been addressed. There is an insistence on forging ahead despite serious, unresolved questions, particularly regarding the lawful appropriation of the budget, a matter on which no parliamentary committee has been duly engaged.
Consequently, ActionSA will not participate in or lend legitimacy to a process under these circumstances. However, recognising that the dialogue will proceed regardless, we will not be absent from our duty to exercise oversight over a process funded by taxpayers. As such, in line with their mandate, our two Members of Parliament, Dr Kgosi Letlape MP and Lerato Ngobeni MP will attend solely to observe proceedings and report accordingly.
Our representatives will travel, be accommodated and catered for at their own personal cost, and will attend this weekend’s convention with the sole mandate of delivering a critical assessment of whether this process will serve as a meaningful platform for reform, or, as the situation suggests, is merely an electioneering exercise that misappropriates public funds under the guise of public participation while sidestepping the real concerns and reforms needed to change South Africa.
We are reminded that the only reason we are confronted with this fraught National Dialogue is that all parties in the GNU committed to it through the signed statement of intent. Yet, these parties now refuse to take responsibility for the process or to exercise any oversight over its unfolding, leaving a void that demands scrutiny.
ActionSA will therefore step in to safeguard the interests of South Africans and ensure proper oversight and accountability over every cent spent on this National Dialogue.
