ActionSA Brings Rand West and Gauteng’s Forgotten Communities to the Legislature Floor

Yesterday, ActionSA took the fight for accountable, ethical and community-focused governance to the floor of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature through a series of hard-hitting questions and a powerful Member’s Statement on Rand West Municipality.

During the House Sitting, ActionSA tabled three priority oral questions to Premier Panyaza Lesufi and the MECs of key portfolios:

On Crime and Wardens: MPL John Moodey challenged the Premier to provide a detailed performance evaluation of the Crime Wardens programme, including oversight, professionalism and legal compliance. This follows claims of success in arresting only 50 out of 442 identified crime kingpins.

On Hijacked Buildings: ActionSA Gauteng Provincial Chairperson and MPL Funzi Ngobeni interrogated the Premier on the broader strategy, timelines and social justice aspects of reclaiming hijacked buildings in Gauteng, particularly in Johannesburg. He demanded transparency on plans to repurpose them into affordable housing or economic infrastructure.

In addition, MPL Emma More delivered a special Member’s Statement shining a spotlight on the Rand West Local Municipality, a region long neglected by the provincial government. The statement highlighted deteriorating infrastructure, rampant corruption and the utter failure of service delivery that continues to betray the residents of this mining region. A delegation of activists from Rand West joined ActionSA MPLs in the gallery in solidarity and as a living reminder of the community voices too often ignored in provincial decision-making.

“Our interventions today were not just about asking questions — they were about making sure Gauteng’s residents, especially in forgotten areas like Rand West, are not left behind,” said Funzi Ngobeni MPL, ActionSA Gauteng Provincial Chairperson.

“The Premier cannot continue to parade token programmes while communities live through daily collapse. The legislature must be a platform for truth and accountability — and today, ActionSA used it precisely for that purpose,” said Emma More MPL, and Member of the Portfolio Committee on Health and Wellness.

ActionSA remains resolute in ensuring that the concerns of Gauteng’s residents – from inner-city decay to failing clinics, from neglected rural municipalities to ignored court rulings – are placed firmly on the provincial agenda.
