ActionSA Calls for Accountability on R70 Road Maintenance Between Rosendal and Senekal
Cllr Lerato Mosala
ActionSA Free State Provincial Secretary
ActionSA expresses deep concern over the stalled maintenance of the R70 road between Rosendal and Senekal. Once a vital artery for tourism, agriculture, and daily commuting, the R70 has now deteriorated into a hazardous corridor, endangering lives, crippling local enterprise, and isolating communities.
Despite commitments by the Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport to complete the project by December 2025, progress has stagnated. Reports indicate that while 70% of the project is both financially and physically complete, funding shortfalls have halted momentum. The absence of clear communication from the contractor, Actophambili & Busi Joint Venture, and provincial authorities has left residents questioning whether the project will ever be finalised.
Local farmers and residents have resorted to self-funded interventions to patch critical sections, underscoring the severity of the crisis and the erosion of public trust. Freight operators now avoid the route entirely, while emergency services face delays that could cost lives.
ActionSA demands: • A transparent update from the Department, Actophambili & Busi Joint Venture on timelines, budget allocations, and contingency plans. • Immediate deployment of interim safety measures to prevent further accidents. • Inclusion of community representatives in oversight structures to ensure accountability and progress monitoring.
The people of Rosendal and surrounding areas deserve safe, reliable infrastructure—not empty promises. ActionSA calls on all spheres of government to act decisively and restore dignity to this essential route.
