ActionSA calls for the immediate resignation of SAFA President Danny Jordaan and the dismissal of the official directly responsible for the catastrophic, careless error that has derailed South Africa’s World Cup qualifying campaign.
It is simply unacceptable that an administrative blunder related to a well-known FIFA provision – the fielding of a player suspended after two yellow cards – has undone one of Bafana Bafana’s best qualification runs in years, possibly shattering the hopes of millions of South Africans who dreamt of seeing their team on football’s biggest stage after playing themselves into pole qualification position.
This follows FIFA’s sanction against SAFA for fielding the suspended Teboho Mokoena in Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 win over Lesotho at Peter Mokaba Stadium earlier this year. The consequence is devastating: South Africa has been stripped of the victory, docked three points, fined R215,000, and officially recorded as having lost 3-0 to Lesotho.
Instead of sitting top of Group C of the African World Cup Qualifiers with one foot in the tournament in the US, Canada and Mexico next year, Bafana now languish in second place behind Benin. With only two matches remaining, qualification is no longer entirely in their own hands.
Despite ActionSA’s repeated calls for SAFA to hold Jordaan and team manager Vincent Tseka – responsible for ensuring only eligible players are fielded – accountable when they appeared before the Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture in June, SAFA’s leadership continues to dodge responsibility.
This gross negligence and incompetence is nothing short of a betrayal of our national team and the football-loving public. Careers, opportunities, and national pride have been stolen because of SAFA’s ineptitude.
ActionSA will not stand by while Bafana Bafana’s dreams, and the dreams of millions of South Africans, are destroyed by administrators who refuse to take accountability. The time for excuses is over. Danny Jordaan and those directly responsible for this embarrassment must go.
