ActionSA has written to the Mpumalanga MEC for Health, Ms. Sasekani Manzini following concerns arising from an oversight visit to the Schoemansdal Clinic in the Nkomazi Local Municipality, earlier today. While ActionSA commends the Department for providing new furniture and undertaking some improvements at the facility, the quality and functionality of several recent upgrades remain deeply concerning.
During the oversight, ActionSA observed that the two male toilets, despite being newly upgraded, remain non-functional as they do not flush. The newly constructed guardhouse was also found to be in a poor state, built without a window and showing clear signs of substandard workmanship. Additionally, the waiting area remains too small to cater for the high patient volumes, forcing residents to queue outside in uncomfortable conditions.
When engaging with community members and clinic staff, it became clear that the people of Schoemansdal do not simply need minor refurbishments, they need a new, properly equipped clinic that can serve their growing community with dignity and efficiency.
ActionSA has therefore written to the MEC for Health requesting:
– Full project details of the Schoemansdal Clinic upgrades,
– The name of the contractor appointed,
– The total cost of the project, and
– An explanation for the non-functional and poor-quality infrastructure delivered.
While ActionSA acknowledges the Department’s efforts to improve conditions, particularly through the supply of furniture, we view the overall project as a waste of public funds due to poor oversight and execution. We have requested that the Department provide a written response within seven (7) working days to address these concerns and clarify corrective measures.
ActionSA remains committed to promoting accountability, transparency, and quality healthcare services for all residents of Nkomazi. We will continue to monitor this matter closely and ensure that public resources are spent in a manner that genuinely benefits communities.
