ActionSA commends the South African Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal for their decisive actions in recent days, which have led to the killing of multiple suspects.
We welcome this robust approach to combating crime in our province, particularly given that three police stations in KwaZulu-Natal consistently rank among the top five most dangerous areas in the country.
We commend and support Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi’s approach of fighting fire with fire to rid our province’s streets of criminals. His tireless efforts and leadership skills to make KZN safer have not gone unnoticed.
We are, however, shocked and deeply concerned by the Provincial Government’s decision to allocate a mere 0.2% of the Provincial budget to the Department of Community Safety and Liaison.
While it is understood that policing is primarily a national government responsibility, the provincial government also plays a crucial role in crime awareness campaigns and other interventions.
This little allocation demonstrates a disconnect between the grand coalition of the ANC/DA/IFP and the dire safety needs of our communities.
ActionSA firmly believes that the Department of Community Safety and Liaison should receive a significantly higher budget allocation.
The department’s initiatives on crime awareness and prevention campaigns are vital in our fight against crime. Enhanced funding would empower these programs to make a substantial impact on crime reduction and community safety.
We urge the grand coalition government to reassess their priorities and invest more substantially in the safety and security of our residents.
The fight against crime requires a united and well-supported effort across all levels of government.
