ActionSA Condemns the Unprocedural Alexandra Home Demolitions by ANC Councillor
Press Statement by Lebo Mokoka
ActionSA Johannesburg Regional Secretary
ActionSA Stands with the Residents of Alexandra whose homes were unprocedurally demolished by City Power and the City of Johannesburg officials led by ANC Ward leader and Councillor; Teffo Raphadu.
We demand accountability from the City of Johannesburg and the Councillor who led the unprocedural act that left many families homeless. As ActionSA, we are deeply disturbed by this act which was committed by public servants that had to serve the people effortless through using proper protocol. We therefore stand firmly with the affected community during this distressing time.
We call on the City of Johannesburg to urgently account for the instructions that led to these demolitions. It is unacceptable that such life-altering actions were carried out without transparent communication, due process, and proper engagement with the residents.
The destruction of homes does not only strip residents of their shelter — it robs families of their dignity, safety, and sense of security. Many of those affected are left displaced, with no immediate alternatives or support from the very government that is meant to serve them. This is a gross failure of governance and a violation of basic human rights.
While we understand the importance of lawful land use, this cannot come at the expense of human dignity and without the exploration of alternative solutions.
ActionSA demands a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding these demolitions, immediate relief for the affected families, and long-term measures to ensure this does not happen again.
Our Mandate as ActionSA is clear and it is it to always continue to advocate for a city that puts its residents first, upholds the rule of law fairly, and leads with compassion.
