ActionSA Congratulates Ashleigh Buhai on Historic Win

On the eve of Women’s Day Ashleigh Buhai made history by becoming the third South African woman to win a major golf championship, being the AIG Women’s Open at Muirfield in Scotland.  The last South African woman to achieve this accolade was Sally Little in 1988, one year prior to Ashleigh’s birth in 1989.

ActionSA congratulates Ms Buhai on this sterling performance and for representing our nation with distinction.

This comes soon after Banyana Banyana also clinched top spot at the African Women’s Cup of Nations.

ActionSA contends that this is yet another wake-up moment in South African sports to drive greater parity between men’s and women’s sporting codes. This means improving the level of investment and national interest behind women’s sports in South Africa and acknowledging our sportswomen who are, in many sporting codes, flying the South African flag highest.

Ashleigh had a very successful amateur career and turned professional the day after her 18th birthday.  In 2007, she won the Catalonia Ladies Masters, which was only her third tournament after turning professional.  Ashleigh also became the youngest ever professional player to win the Ladies’ European Tour.

On Sunday the South African was under pressure, after blowing a five-shot lead, but remained cool and managed to defeat Gee Chum on the fourth extra hole to clinch the title.

After her fantastic victory at the AIG Women’s Open, Ashleigh’s ranking is sure to climb.
