ActionSA Demands Decisive Mayoral Action Amid Executive Crisis in Johannesburg

The ActionSA Johannesburg Caucus notes with serious concern recent reports involving the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport, Cllr Kenny Kunene, and his presence at the residence of an individual accused of orchestrating the murder of DJ Sumbody.

As a political party rooted in ethical leadership, clean governance, and accountability to the residents we serve, ActionSA firmly believes that public representatives must uphold the highest standards of integrity both in their official capacity and private conduct. When such standards are brought into question, the legitimacy and credibility of the broader administration are inevitably placed at risk.

We acknowledge the Patriotic Alliance’s decision to place Cllr Kunene on a 30-day leave of absence from party activities and to relieve him of his duties on the Mayoral Committee. This is a necessary step. However, any conduct that undermines public confidence in the City’s leadership must be confronted with full transparency and accountability.

It is equally important to highlight that, beyond this controversy, the Mayoral Committee is now operating with two vacant portfolios. The position of MMC for Finance remains unfilled following the election of the former MMC as Speaker of Council. This dual leadership vacuum threatens to destabilise two of the City’s most critical departments, Finance and Transport at a time when decisive leadership is urgently required.

ActionSA therefore calls on the Executive Mayor to move with speed and resolve to fill these vacancies. Prolonged indecision on these appointments compromises the administration’s ability to deliver services, maintain fiscal discipline, and address the pressing challenges facing residents.

We reiterate that ActionSA does not engage in political grandstanding. Our focus remains firmly on upholding the integrity, stability, and effectiveness of governance in Johannesburg. We will continue to monitor developments and exercise robust oversight in defence of the public interest.
