ActionSA Demands Urgent Tabling of R1.8 billion Chemical Toilet Tender Report in Council
Press Statement by Xolani Khumalo
ActionSA Ekurhuleni Mayoral Candidate
ActionSA demands that Executive Mayor Xhakaza’s administration account for its consistent disregard of council, as several forensic reports including a probity audit report on the R1.8 billion chemical toilet tender submitted in June and compiled by the late Chief Auditor Mpho Mafole remain unpresented to council, raising serious concerns about transparency and accountability.
The allegations of irregularities in the tender’s selection process are deeply concerning and warrant a thorough investigation given the scale and value of the contract. As the council bears the responsibility of ensuring accountability, it must exercise its oversight function and scrutinise these allegations without delay.
Should the administration fail to present the report to council in October, it will strongly suggest a cover-up and further promote maladministration. Mayor Xhakaza’s anti-corruption rhetoric will unless followed by decisive action. He must demonstrate genuine commitment to transparency and accountability rather than paying lip service to these principles.
ActionSA will exhaust every legislative avenue to ensure the report is tabled before council. We believe that the fight against corruption requires not only clarity but above all fearless determination. We must ensure that even the slightest suggestion of impropriety is immediately confronted and never delayed.
ActionSA pays tribute to the late Mpho Mafole whose tragic death underscores the systemic failure to protect whistleblowers and those who take a stand against corruption. His courage serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by those who expose the criminality crippling local government.
ActionSA believes that corruption must be treated as public enemy number one. This is why our Parliamentary Caucus is working tirelessly to introduce legislative reforms aimed at delivering a decisive blow to this national crisis.
