ActionSA Emerges as the Leading Alternative in Merafong After Ward 10 By-Election

ActionSA welcomes the results of the Ward 10 Merafong by-election held on Wednesday, 26 November 2025, which demonstrate unmistakably that our party has become the leading alternative to the failed ANC administration in this municipality.

Despite contesting the ward for the first time and doing so with limited local resources, ActionSA secured a strong third-place finish, outperforming the DA, MK, and PAC, while closing the gap on the EFF to challenge for second place. This outcome is a decisive indication that the people of Khutsong and the broader Merafong community are ready for credible, principled and competent leadership after years of collapse under ANC rule.

Our performance confirms what residents have repeatedly told us on the ground: they are tired of sinkholes that swallow neighbourhoods, water outages that stretch for weeks, roads that have become dust tracks, violent crime, service collapse, and a municipality that has simply stopped functioning. Ward 10 has shown that communities are no longer prepared to suffer in silence, nor are they willing to entrust their future to the very political actors who destroyed their municipality.

ActionSA’s growth in this by-election, increasing our support by more than 150% compared to the 2024 national ballot reflects the trust residents are placing in a party that offers clear solutions, clean governance, and a proven track record of delivery where we serve in government. It is also the result of disciplined structures, principled leadership, and a campaign rooted in community engagement rather than empty slogans.

We are especially proud of our Merafong Regional Leadership and branch in Ward 10, which has shown what is possible when local leaders organise themselves around ActionSA’s values of integrity, service and accountability. Their work has anchored our presence in Merafong and will be central to our expansion across the West Rand ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.

ActionSA extends its gratitude to our brave candidate, Mokete Botha Nthongoa, who represented the party with dignity and commitment; our activists and volunteers who campaigned tirelessly on the ground; our public representatives who supported this effort; and the campaign team led by the Provincial Secretary, together with the Regional Chairperson and Regional Secretary of Merafong.

Lastly, we acknowledge the decisive leadership of the ActionSA Gauteng PEC for supporting the contestation of a ward outside the metros, a strategic decision that has now been vindicated. This by-election proves that ActionSA’s growth is not confined to Johannesburg, Tshwane or Ekurhuleni. It is happening in communities across Gauteng who are desperate for a new beginning.

The message from Merafong is clear:
The ANC can be defeated, communities are ready for real change, and ActionSA is the party capable of delivering it.
