ActionSA has reported four elected councillors of the City of Tshwane to the Office of the Speaker for breach of Section 2(a) and (b) of the Code of Conduct For Councillors in the past few weeks.
The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) deliberate efforts to mislead residents and cause panic through the spreading of lies and misinformation needs to be urgently addressed, as no councillor is above the law. The actions of all 107 elected councillors of the City of Tshwane should at all times be in good faith, honesty and in a transparent manner.
On 6 November 2025, an elected ward councillor posted a message on her service delivery group, saying that there are “reports of typhoid fever (Typhoid) in the tap water in the Pretoria area”, and asked residents to refrain from drinking water “directly from the tap”. This was sent two hours after a corrective graphic was shared by the City of Tshwane on their official channels, causing unnecessary anxiety to affected residents.
On 13 November 2025, another elected ward councillor deliberately attempted to mislead residents by saying that that was “no vandalism in Irene”. The high level of vandalism of infrastructure in the area has been much cause of media attention, and such misleading statements not only frustrate residents, but are also not in the best interest of the municipality.
On 13 November 2025, the DA Mayoral Candidate Cilliers Brink put out a media statement to deliberately mislead residents of Bronkhorstspruit into believing that one of their councillors had
“persisted for more than a year” in escalating the on-going sewage overflow at Cultura Park. There is no evidence to support such statement, and compromise the credibility and integrity of the municipality.
On 8 December 2025, an elected ward councillor was reportedly found to be misleading residents, by allowing residents to dump non-garden waste at the City of Tshwane’s garden refuse site. This matter has also been referred to the Office of the Speaker for investigation.
ActionSA is committed to good governance and service delivery, and will hold all elected councillors accountable to the rule of law. Residents deserve better than the spreading of malicious lies by elected councillors, that could harm the well-being of residents and bring into disrepute the credibility of the municipality they represent.
