ActionSA Notes Election of Ad Hoc Committee Chairperson and Stands Ready to Guard the Integrity of Its Work
Press Statement by Dereleen James MP
ActionSA Member of Parliament
ActionSA notes the election of Hon. Lekganyane as the Chairperson of the Ad Hoc Committee to Investigate Allegations made by Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. However, we remain guided by the cautionary view that it would have been more appropriate for this role to be filled by a member of a party whose senior leadership is not implicated in the serious allegations that fall within the committee’s scope of work.
We believe that the nature of these allegations, which involve a sitting cabinet member with alleged links to criminal syndicates, demands a process beyond reproach. ActionSA is not a passive observer in the fight against corruption. We will use our representation on this committee to ensure its work is conducted independently, transparently and with a firm resolve to uncover the truth.
It stands to reason that this committee should not be chaired by any Member of Parliament from a party whose members are directly implicated in the allegations under investigation, especially given the very nature of how partisan politics operates. Doing so would erode public confidence and compromise the process from the outset.
Despite these concerns, ActionSA will actively contribute to the committee’s work in the interest of justice and accountability. We encourage any South African with relevant information to email parliament@actionsa.org.za and we will ensure that all credible information is presented for consideration by the committee.
