ActionSA President on the Metsimaholo Urinals Racism Video

Some people might argue that the 2021 video that emerged yesterday, depicting pictures of several South African political figures stuck inside a restaurant’s urinals and being pissed upon, is old, but I argue that the impact of it is not old and that it goes deep into pouring salt over festering historic wounds.

The video emerged following an alleged employee’s complaint against racism and unfair working conditions and shows men laughing as they pee into urinals plastered with images of former president Jacob Zuma, former Health and Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana-Zuma, and EFF leader, Julius Malema. The owner of the “No Name Bar”, in whose toilets the pictures were found, correctly faces a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission.

We call for harsh punishment against those who stuck the pictures in the urinals, including the owner of “No Name Bar” for having allowed it, and for an example to be set that this sort of thing will not be tolerated, as it only serves to take our county backward amid increased levels of racism and inter-group mistrust. If no action is taken, this video will further embolden people who perpetuate such racist conduct to feel sanctioned to continue doing so. It must never be allowed.
