Today, ActionSA remembers the tragic murder of Babita Deokaran, who on this day in 2021 was brutally assassinated for exposing the cancerous corruption that pillaged critical public resources in Gauteng, making the ultimate sacrifice in the fight against corruption.
Deokaran’s death represents the justice system’s failure to protect brave South Africans who are gatvol with corruption and who have taken it upon themselves to play their part in confronting this scourge of coordinated criminality, even at the risk of their own lives.
Tragically, four years later, the masterminds behind her brutal assassination remain unknown and her family continues to wait for justice. ActionSA continues to call on law enforcement to strengthen its efforts and ensure that those responsible are finally held to account.
From Babita Deokaran to Marumo Phenya, ActionSA maintains that their deaths were entirely preventable, and their assassinations stand as a damning indictment of a system that, years later, has still not delivered justice to their families. Worse still, corruption remains pervasive and continues to thrive, with little evidence that government is truly committed to fighting it.
In 2021, ActionSA committed to pursuing justice and stronger protections for whistleblowers. Now, having been elected to Parliament, ActionSA is proud to announce that we are hard at work on formally introducing Private Members’ Bills that will not only strengthen the fight against corruption but, more importantly, ensure greater protection and incentivisation for whistleblowers who risk everything to expose criminality.
ActionSA honours the memory of Babita, Marumo and every other whistleblower, along with their families who have paid the ultimate price for simply doing what is right. We will be an active participant in using our legislative access to play our part in ending the scourge of corruption.
