ActionSA Supports AFD Loan, Satisfied With Progress on Rescinding The Unjust R200 Electricity Fee
Nobuhle Mthembu
ActionSA Joburg Caucus Leader
ActionSA voted in favour of the AFD loan after MMC for Finance, Dada Morero, provided the council with the critical details required to carefully consider the proposal.
Importantly, ActionSA urges the City to embark on aggressive revenue collection to offset the future need to increase the City’s already significant debt burden. As a reminder, the City finds itself borrowing R2.5 billion despite R8.071 billion being owed to the City by 50 of the largest power users.
ActionSA welcomes the commitment from the MMC for Finance to review the R200 electricity surcharge following immense pressure from residents, which we ensured featured prominently in Council. While we welcome this commitment, we expect the MMC to implement this review in compliance with the MFMA prescripts that deals with the process to adjust the budget of the municipality, which takes place around February.
Furthermore, we would like to emphasise that in supporting the AFD loan, we do so with full recognition of the vital need to prioritise service delivery in Gauteng. ActionSA wants to see the City reclaiming hijacked buildings, law enforcement agencies addressing illegal immigration decisively, and, most importantly, the Mayor of Johannesburg, Cllr Kabelo Gwamanda, vacating his office.
ActionSA would like to thank the Premier of Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi, and his team for listening to our appeals for intervention and for promptly acting in the interests of the residents.
ActionSA will continue fighting for the best interests of Johannesburg residents and will explore every viable avenue to be the rational voice that represents their will. It is clear that residents desperately demand the stabilisation of the City and ActionSA will work to stop the decline and ensure effective service delivery.
