ActionSA to Request SIU Probe into Alleged Links Between Makoro Foundation Funders and Polokwane Tender Beneficiaries
Press Statement by Victor Mothemela
ActionSA Limpopo Provincial Chairperson
ActionSA will request the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate potential links between the funders of the Makoro Foundation and companies allegedly benefiting from tender contracts within Polokwane Municipality. Our request seeks to determine whether the foundation’s activities are connected to any wrongdoing in the awarding of municipal contracts.
ActionSA’s request focuses on identifying all funders and determining whether they are directly or indirectly linked to businesses awarded tenders by Polokwane Municipality, as well as any connections between the Makoro Foundation and Polokwane Mayor John Mpe. Importantly, we seek to establish whether due process was followed in the procurement process, particularly in cases involving funders of the Makoro Foundation.
Our request will further seek an investigation into Iceberg Trading Company, reportedly one of the major sponsors of the Makoro Foundation. This company has secured contracts worth millions for electrical work, road construction, and civil works, raising concerns about:
– Iceberg Trading Company’s adherence to proper bidding processes for municipal tenders.
– Whether there were any untoward circumstances or undue advantage in the granting of these contracts.
– The level of participation of Iceberg Trading Company in projects funded by the Polokwane Municipality.
ActionSA’s request is part of a broader commitment to increased transparency, accountability, and ethical governance in Limpopo. We believe that trust within the community is undermined, resources are misappropriated, and development is impeded due to corruption.
ActionSA has a zero-tolerance commitment to fighting the pervasive corruption that has particularly crippled local government. Our request to the SIU is aimed at ensuring a thorough investigation, with prosecution and punishment for those found guilty of wrongdoing.
