ActionSA Tshwane Region Welcomes MPL Listening Tour and Feedback Session with Mamelodi Hostel Residents
Derick Mahlangu
ActionSA Tshwane Regional Chairperson
ActionSA Tshwane Region welcomes the successful conclusion of the Listening Tour visit by our Gauteng Provincial Legislature caucus to Mamelodi Hostel. This visit formed part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring that the voices of hostel residents are heard in the Legislature, and that government departments are held accountable for addressing their needs.
During the feedback session, ActionSA MPLs reported back to residents on the progress and in some cases the lack thereof, made by the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements, the MEC, and the Office of the Premier in response to issues raised during our previous visit.
Key updates provided to residents included: • Electricity Restoration: MPLs outlined the Department’s commitment to repairing broken lights, plugs, and wiring, with an estimated budget of R18.9 million and a project duration of six months once work begins. Residents were cautioned that this does not yet include formal, individual electricity connections for every household — an issue ActionSA will continue to fight for. • Water and Sanitation: Residents were informed of planned sewer and water system rehabilitation, including pipe replacements and unblocking of drainage systems, while noting the absence of any timelines for completion. • Structural Repairs: Feedback was provided on proposed roofing and structural works to address unsafe living conditions, with ActionSA noting that no mention was made of potential asbestos roofing risks. • Redevelopment Commitments: MPLs relayed the Department’s intention to redevelop the hostel into formal housing units, while highlighting the lack of a clear plan or timeframe.
As ActionSA Tshwane, we reaffirm our commitment to standing with the residents of Mamelodi Hostel until every one of these promises is delivered. We will continue to use our representation in the Gauteng Legislature to hold the MEC and the Department of Human Settlements accountable, ensuring that residents receive dignified, safe, and functional living conditions.
The residents of Mamelodi Hostel have waited for far too long. ActionSA will not allow their plight to be forgotten.
