ActionSA Urges Mayor Xhakaza to Prioritise Implementation

On Thursday, 27 March 2025 the Executive Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni Nkosingiphile Xhakaza delivered the State of the City Address (SOCA). In February, the mayor initiated a Service Delivery Mayoral Outreach Programme, which aims to address service delivery issues in various communities. However, despite these efforts, concerns around service delivery persist.

Some of the issues that need attention include a revenue shortfall of R2 billion due to tampering with electricity accounts, ongoing challenges in Eskom-supplied areas, including delays in electricity restoration, water supply disruption, and overgrown grass, the need for improved infrastructure, including roads, power, water supply and sewerage, delayed housing provision: the fast tracking of housing projects, waste collection, holding contractors accountable for the service delivery.

It is clear that there is still much work to be done to bridge the gap between the mayor’s promises and the reality experienced by the Ekurhuleni residents. However, as ActionSA we are encouraged that the mayor has listened to our concerns over hijacked buildings. Reclaiming our cities and revitalising the economy through housing projects and commercial projects through direct action on hijacked and dilapidated buildings.

Along with this we welcome the announcement on insourcing, a position that ActionSA has long championed, bringing capacity back into the city and reducing our reliance on costly contractors and providing dignity to our workers.

While the Mayor has addressed many of the issues that we have highlighted, we remain vigilant of the fact that residents want action and accountability, ActionSA will continue to hold the executive accountable and ensure services are delivered timeously.
