ActionSA Welcomes Sentencing of Johan Cloete for Rape of 16-year- old
Patricia Kopane
ActionSA Free State Provincial Chairperson
ActionSA welcomes the sentence handed down today by the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court against Johan Cloete.
Cloete is a 47-year-old man who stands convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl for almost a year. Cloete was sentenced five years in prison for rape and three years for sexual assault. This sentence will include the registration of his name in the Sexual Offenders Register.
Sadly, this girl was abused by a man who was supposed to protect her. It is against this background that ActionSA saw it important to support the Cloete family.
ActionSA would have preferred stronger sentencing against Johan Cloete and anyone who is convicted of violence against women and children. We nevertheless welcome the strong message sent by the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court today that there is no place in our society for men who molest children or any person.
We remain committed to ensuring perpetrators of human rights get tough sentences and we will continue to support survivors of gender-based violence.
