ActionSA Welcomes Sentencing of Mozambican Woman Who Poisoned Stepdaughter
Press Statement by Thoko Mashiane MPL
ActionSA Member of Mpumalanga Legislature
ActionSA welcomes the sentencing of Mozambican national, Clara Masinga, who has been handed 23 years’ direct imprisonment by the Mpumalanga High Court for the brutal murder of her 11-year-old stepdaughter, Jennifer Gumbi.
This heart-wrenching case has shocked communities across the province. The deliberate and cruel manner in which this innocent child was killed underscores the urgent need to confront the rising tide of domestic violence and violence against children in South Africa.
We commend the investigating officers, the National Prosecuting Authority, and the judiciary for ensuring that justice was served. The swift arrest, prosecution, and conviction send a clear message that such heinous crimes will not go unpunished.
Judge Lindiwe Vukeya’s remarks condemning the increasing incidents of domestic violence and child killings are deeply significant. South Africa cannot allow a culture of violence within families to take root. ActionSA stands firmly with victims and their families and will continue to advocate for stronger protection mechanisms for women and children.
While no sentence can ever restore Jennifer’s life, this judgement provides a measure of justice and relief to her loved ones. We call on communities to remain vigilant, report abuse, and work together to ensure that our homes become spaces of safety and love, not violence.
