ActionSA Women’s Forum Calls for Urgent Regulation in Childcare

ActionSA Women’s Forum is deeply saddened and outraged by the tragic fire in Mayfair, Johannesburg, that claimed the lives of four innocent children. This devastating incident is a stark reminder of the urgent need for stronger oversight and accountability in childcare services across our province.

It is unacceptable that unregulated, fly-by-night childcare facilities continue to operate without the necessary certification or adherence to safety standards. The tragic loss of these young lives highlights the systemic failure to protect children from unsafe environments.

We call on the relevant authorities to swiftly investigate this matter and ensure that those responsible for negligence face the full consequences of the law. We also urge parents and guardians to prioritise the safety of their children by seeking legally registered childcare facilities that adhere to proper health and safety regulations.

ActionSA Women’s Forum reiterates the call for the professionalisation and integration of Early Childhood Centres (ECDs) into the basic education system and remains committed to advocating for stricter regulations on childcare facilities, as well as ensuring that communities are educated on the dangers of unlicensed daycare centres. No child should ever lose their life due to negligence in an ECD.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families affected by this tragedy and stand in solidarity with the community in demanding justice for these children.
