ANC, DA, IFP & EFF Unite to Block ActionSA’s Push for Transparency in Housing Allocations

ActionSA is deeply disappointed by the collapse of our proposed amendment in the eThekwini Council that sought to publicise the National Housing Needs Register (NHNR) in order to ensure transparency and fairness in the allocation of public housing.

Our sole mandate in calling for the publicising of the NHNR is to eliminate potential fraud and corruption. On many occasions, residents apply for public housing and patiently wait for their turn, only to discover that when allocations are finalised, officials or ward councillors hand over these houses to their relatives, friends, or political allies.

Making the NHNR publicly accessible would have allowed residents to track their applications and hold the municipality accountable, ensuring that those who are rightfully on the list receive their homes.

Despite the clear intent to protect residents and strengthen transparency, this amendment was rejected by the ANC, DA, IFP, and EFF. It is deeply concerning that parties which claim to fight for the poor and vulnerable would refuse to support a measure designed to curb corruption and protect beneficiaries.

While concerns were raised regarding the POPI Act, we made it clear that we were only calling for the publication of names —excluding sensitive information such as ID numbers or physical addresses— to fully comply with privacy laws.

The refusal of the GNU/GPU partners to support this initiative underscores their lack of political will to fight against fraud and corruption in the city.

ActionSA remains committed to standing with the people of eThekwini and will continue to fight for transparent systems that protect the most vulnerable from exploitation and injustice.
