DA’s Motion of No Confidence an Act of Desperation to Derail Progress in Tshwane

ActionSA has noted with deep concern the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) tabling of a motion of no confidence against the Speaker of the City of Tshwane. This is nothing short of a desperate and transparent attempt by the DA to destabilise another coalition government that is beginning to demonstrate real signs of progress and stability after years of dysfunction.

Over the past several months, the coalition government in Tshwane has turned the corner. Under our shared leadership, the City has passed its first fully funded budget since 2022, achieved a credit rating outlook improvement, begun paying down inherited debt, and received national recognition as the metro with the second-lowest dissatisfaction levels in the country. These are not abstract metrics, but reflect real improvements in the lives of residents and a government finally committed to delivery.

It is precisely this track record of success that has sent the DA into a tailspin. Having failed Tshwane residents during their time at the helm, the DA cannot stomach a coalition that is now exposing that failure through better performance. Their motion of no confidence is not about accountability, it is a selfish act of political self-preservation.

The irony of the situation is glaring. The current Speaker was elected with DA support in direct contravention of the coalition agreement in place at the time. The DA had every opportunity to correct this and did not. Former Mayor Cilliers Brink governed alongside this Speaker without issue. Only now, as the City shows real progress under a renewed coalition mandate, does the DA raise objections, revealing the opportunism that has come to define their conduct.

Tshwane residents deserve better than political games that threaten hard-won progress. This motion is not about principle, it is about fear. Fear of a coalition that is delivering. Fear of exposure. Fear of becoming irrelevant to a public that is starting to see what good governance can look like.

ActionSA urges all Tshwane councillors to reject this motion for what it is: a bad-faith effort to upend a working government. We remain committed to the coalition mandate and focused on delivering quality services to our communities. We will not be distracted or derailed.
