Ekurhuleni Housing Crisis: Masina’s Government Is Failing Us

The Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Mzwandile Masina’s government is failing the residents of the City.

It is troubling that 27 years into South Africa’s democracy, millions of our citizens do not have access to adequate housing, water and electricity. In Ekurhuleni, 18.4% of all households live in corrugated iron shacks and other informal dwellings.

Everywhere you look there are sprouting squatter camps as opposed to serviced stands and decent housing.

The ANC-led administration in Ekurhuleni has hidden behind the facade of housing policies and budget allocations to evade addressing the housing crisis in the City. In addition to its housing woes, more than 8% of households in Ekurhuleni rely on shared communal taps for water while 20.2% of are without reliable electricity supply.

It cannot be ignored that these issues within the City are a direct result of rampant corruption by city officials who have been acting with impunity right under Mayor Masina’s watch.

The recent assassination of Gauteng Human Settlements official, Teboho Makhoa in June this year, attests to the levels rot of maladministration, mismanagement, and general maleficence within the City.

These circumstances are completely unacceptable.

Even more alarming is that Mayor Masina seems to have now joined the ranks of Randall Williams in Tshwane as yet another “ghost mayor” in Gauteng’s largest metros.

To that end, Masina’s government must not be allowed to continue to to disappoint the people of Ekurhuleni. His administration’s efforts to hold on to power while failing to deliver basic services to the residents must come to an abrupt end.

It is therefore incumbent upon the people of Ekurhuleni to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the status quo.

ActionSA stands ready to provide an alternative to the broken political system that has failed South Africans. We are assembling a team of South Africans committed to public service and not service of political parties, who have the skills, experience, and knowledge to achieve our vision for a country that works for all its residents.

In the end, once Ekurhuleni gets back on track, Gauteng Province will get back on track.  Afterall, ours is a city that is the gateway to the rest of Southern Africa.
