Formal Statement on DA’s Misleading Claims Regarding Sandton Drive Renaming

ActionSA notes with serious concern the false and deliberately misleading claims contained in the Democratic Alliance (DA)’s recent press statement, which alleges that ActionSA, alongside other parties, is “pushing forward on the renaming of Sandton Drive”.

We categorically reject this baseless claim. ActionSA has consistently and publicly opposed the proposed renaming of Sandton Drive to Leila Khaled Drive both in Council and in direct engagements with residents.

In fact, it is because of ActionSA’s firm opposition, together with other parties, that the renaming process has been halted.

We have led opposition efforts against this wasteful proposal from the start. We welcomed the halting of the process and remain committed to resisting any attempt to revive it.

Our position is publicly documented and widely reported:

“ActionSA pleased by decision to halt progress in Sandton Drive renaming – https://www.actionsa.org.za/actionsa-pleased-by-decision-to-halt-progress-in-sandton-drive-renaming/

“ActionSA will oppose the re-naming of Sandton Drive when it comes to Council – https://www.actionsa.org.za/actionsa-will-oppose-the-re-naming-of-sandton-drive-when-it-comes-to-council/

Credible news outlets have confirmed that the renaming process has been stopped following opposition by ActionSA and others:

“Sandton Drive renaming in limbo as parties fail to reach consensus” – The Citizen – https://www.citizen.co.za/news/south-atrica/politics/sandton-drive-renaming-limbo-parties-consensus/

“Sandton Drive renaming to Leila Khaled halted after political pressure” – IOL,  The Star – https://www.iol.co.za/the-star/news/sandton-drive-renaming-to-leilo-khaled-halted-after-political-pressure-9b517d13-2039-4772-8c92-3aa55f83d3d7

ActionSA has always been clear that the city should focus on service delivery not political vanity projects.

While basic services like water, road maintenance and streetlights are in disrepair, wasting millions on renaming a road is irresponsible and unacceptable.

Instead of misleading the public, the DA should focus on working with ActionSA to fix Johannesburg’s real problems including collapsing service delivery and budget mismanagement.

We call on the DA to:

– Retract its false statement immediately.

– Apologise to the residents of Johannesburg for attempting to mislead them on a matter of public importance.

ActionSA will never support wasteful expenditure on projects like the proposed renaming of Sandton Drive. We will continue fighting for transparent and accountable governance.

We will always prioritise service delivery and residents’ needs above political gamesmanship.

We urge residents to rely on verified facts and not be swayed by misleading political rhetoric.
