From the Desk of

The Provincial Chairperson

Dear Actioneers,

We are excited to welcome all members of ActionSA Gauteng to our Provincial Imbizo in City of Tshwane this Saturday, 14 September 2024 at 10:00AM. Our President Herman Mashaba will be updating us on recent political developments in City of Tshwane, as we celebrate 4 years in Gauteng Province.

Members who have not yet been able to register on the new membership system will be assisted at the entrance, so do encourage all members to join us then. Please speak to your Branch Chairperson, Constituency Chairperson or Regional Chairperson for more information about transport options.

We believe this event will provide all members opportunity to voice their concerns and be heard.

Looking forward to seeing you in person then.

Kind regards,

Funzi Ngobeni MPL

Update from the Regions

RAND WEST

ActionSA proudly supported the launch of the Randfontein Community Police Forum (CPF) and the Dan Tloome Mega Project, a ground-breaking initiative focused on community safety and youth empowerment on Saturday, 31 August.

This event aimed to mobilize young people to take ownership of their community’s safety and well-being. ActionSA Regional Chairperson Lewatle Diale was honoured to attend and motivate the youth participants. In addition, ActionSA donated essential toiletries to support the local community’s basic needs.

“It’s inspiring to see young people taking a stand for their community’s safety,” said Lewatle Diale, ActionSA Regional Chairperson. “As ActionSA, we will continue to support initiatives that empower our youth and foster collaborative community-driven solutions.

ActionSA encourages young people to join community safety initiatives; local stakeholders to support CPF and Dan Tloome Mega Project, and government to prioritise community safety and development.

Western Mega Project Raid

Western Mega Project was raided by authorities last week, confirming long-standing allegations of employing undocumented foreign nationals and favouring outside contractors over local businesses. ActionSA continues to advocate for the community of Toekomrus, demanding accountability, transparency, and inclusive development.

ActionSA remains committed to addressing the concerns of the Toekomrus community, including:
– Job opportunities for local residents
– Transparent procurement processes
– Community engagement and feedback mechanisms
– Holding authorities accountable for past mistakes

MOGALE CITY

ActionSA Mogale City conducted an oversight visit of Krugersdorp West Swimming Pool, to assess the level of maintenance of this recreational facility, and to understand why it remains closed since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Residents of Krugersdorp, Munsievlle and surrounding areas are negatively affected by the on-going mismanagement of this recreational facility. ActionSA will continue to push for accountability from those involved. #InfrastructureDevelopment

EMFULENI

ActionSA Emfuleni is very excited about the implementation of ActionSA’s new membership system, and encouraged by the number of members joining daily.

Residents are desperate for change. ActionSA Emfuleni will be embarking on a tour to identify service delivery issues this week. #BuyelekhayaEmfuleni

Update from the Caucuses

PROVINCIAL LEGISLATURE

We were thrilled to welcome Ivyn Sambo as Researcher to Provincial Legislature this week, and we look forward to working closely with him this term of office.

Regional issues that need to be driven at a provincial level can be communicated through your Regional Chairperson to the relevant ActionSA MPL, as per allocation below. The MPLs will then reach out to the relevant portfolio committee member for input and support.

MPL Funzi Ngobeni: City of Johannesburg, Merafong and Emfuleni.

MPL Emma More: City of Tshwane, Mogale City and RandWest.

MPL John Moodey: City of Ekurhuleni, Midvaal and Lesedi.

JOHANNESBURG

In order to address service delivery deficiencies in City of Johannesburg, ActionSA Joburg Caucus has embarked on various oversight campaigns to ascertain how best the City can bolster those entities that are failing to function optimally.

On 6 September, ActionSA Joburg Caucus visited Turffontein Fire Station following myriad of concerns from residents ranging from slow response time to insufficient resources, infrastructure negligence and vandalism.

Turffontein Fire Station was built in 1906, but has since became a safe heaven for vagrants due to its dilapidated state. Parts of the building that were newly constructed have been vandalised, and the fire station lacks some critical equipment necessary for firefighters to act promptly in case of emergencies.

ActionSA will be addressing these issues in Council, so as to ensure that Turffontein Fire Station receives the required support.

City of Joburg EISD Committee Chairperson Cllr Vhengani Munyayi conducted an oversight visit to an open space in Southdale that has become a risk hazard. Criminals are using it as a crime zone; recently a body was found on the spot.

EISD committee has engaged all relevant stakeholders and their feedback will be shared with the community affected shortly.

TSHWANE

A crucial oversight focused on service delivery failures by the Democratic Alliance in Tshwane was conducted by National Chairperson Michael Beaumont, Provincial Secretary Evelyn Mondlana and Regional Chairperson Jackie Mathabathe last week.

We visited the townships of Soshanguve and Atteridgeville, both of which are significantly affected by inadequate access to essential services.

During our visits, we observed the challenges faced by residents, including:
– Inadequate access to essential services in Soshanguve and Atteridgeville
– Water supply challenges
– Poor waste management
– Infrastructure collapse
– Sewage running in the streets
– Non-working street lights
– Frequent electricity outages
– Illegal electricity connections

These first-hand experiences underscore the urgent need for better service delivery to improve the quality of life for the communities in these areas. The service delivery tour formed part of ActionSA’s Senate-approved review process of our position in the Multi-Party Coalition in City of Tshwane.

EKURHULENI

Ekurhuleni Caucus has been holding key meetings with waste contract workers, as part of their on-going efforts to see more workers insourced in the City.

In council, a report against the EMPD Chief of Police, Mr Mapiyeye was heard as an in-committee item which garnered media attention. Mapiyeye faces serious allegations of misconduct against female members in the EMPD, who claim he has sexually and physically assaulted them.

This follows our statement on another important EMPD official, Mr Makhwanazi the ‘Blue light blesser’ earlier this year.

Clearly, a culture of non-accountability exists amongst the top brass of the EMPD, who are supposed to be focusing on curbing crime in the City.
