Dear Actioneers,
The ANC made a public announcement on Wednesday, 29 August, that they would be withdrawing the Motion of No Confidence (MONC) in Executive Mayor of City of Tshwane, thereby allowing ActionSA to conclude its review processes within 10 days to a fortnight.
We have consulted extensively with our structures at a provincial, regional and constituency level these past two weeks, and will focus on highlighting service delivery failures in the next two weeks, so as to underscore our dissatisfaction with the way the DA-led government in Tshwane has continued to undermine our service delivery in townships.
We believe that a government led by ActionSA in City of Tshwane will better ensure equal representation across all communities in the metro.
In light of the coordinated and deliberate propaganda attacks orchestrated by the Democratic Alliance (DA), using a collective of paid bots with scripts drafted from the DA’s Head Office, Gauteng PEC has officially informed the Senate that we will not participate in the proposed poll, as it will give a skewed interpretation of the view of residents.
Instead, PEC has resolved to host a Provincial Imbizo with President Herman Mashaba on Saturday, 14 September in City of Tshwane to assist those members who are struggling to register with the new membership system, to celebrate 4-years as ActionSA Gauteng and to hear first-hand developments on the political situation in City of Tshwane.
We encourage all members to register on the new membership system before then, so as to ensure a seat.
You can register online here: act.canvass.today/members/join.php
Looking forward to seeing you in person then.
Kind regards,
Funzi Ngobeni MPL
Gauteng Provincial Chairperson
RAND WEST
ActionSA RandWest Regional Chairperson Lewatle Diale attended a community engagement on Wednesay, 28 August at Irvans Park, Bekkersdal with the Executive Mayor, MEC of Housing and MPL (Member of the Provincial Legislature) to discuss a new housing project in the area.
Diale was able to raise some real concerns of the community affected by the Montrose and Western Mega Housing Project, as well as question the actions of state against members of the so-called “construction mafia” last month.
With the help of MPL Emma More, ActionSA is committed to ensuring that abandoned housing projects are accounted for and that the local community is prioritized in allocations of units and work opportunities.
MOGALE CITY
ActionSA Mogale City Women’s Forum hosted a Gender-Based Violence Dialogue at Mogale City Hall on Saturday, 31 August, to look at GBV and discuss strategies to challenge gender norms, promote positive masculinity and empower survivors.
Mogale City Women’s Forum also conducted an oversight visit at Maki Legwete Clinic the day before, to engage with patients and find out what their challenges are.
They also spent time connecting with the community of Sonap and Kagiso Ext. 12. Mogale City Women’s Forum is touching and building community.
PROVINCIAL LEGISLATURE
ActionSA Gauteng MPL Emma More participated in the Gauteng Sports, Arts, Culture & Recreation Portfolio’s unannounced committee oversight visit to Sedibeng Region last week.
Two out of three Ratanda Cluster Libraries were visited, one in Ext 23 & and Ext 7. Issues identified included:
ActionSA will continue pushing for these issues to be resolved.
JOHANNESBURG
Accountability in the City of Johannesburg is no longer optional. The recent election of two ActionSA
councillors as Chairpersons of Section 79 Committees cements our role as one of a formidable constructive opposition.
Cllr Mpumi Edward has been elected Chairperson of Section 79 Finance Committee. Cllr Edward is a fearless, level-headed and consistent leader who has worked tirelessly to highlight the plight of security guards, ghost employees and poor service across government departments.
Cllr Vhengani Munyayi has been elected Chairperson of Section 79 Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) Committee will work around the clock to ensure that residents of Johannesburg residents receive basic service delivery. Cllr Munyayi’s motion to integrate Soweto residents from Eskom to City Power was passed by the Council, and he has also submitted a motion to abolish the bucket system.
For a four-year-old political party, our successes prove yet again the commitment that we have to change the lives of our residents.
TSHWANE
A media advisory was issued by the Office of the Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane on Tuesday, 27 August, inviting the media to an update on the status of the multi-party coalition at midday.
As ActionSA is currently reviewing our position within the multi-party coalition, we declined the invitation from the Coalition Management Committee to attend the press conference.
This set in motion a co-ordinated and deliberate propaganda attack orchestrated by the Democratic Alliance (DA), using a collective of paid bots with scripts drafted from the DA’s Head Office.
In response, ActionSA Tshwane compiled a series of graphics highlighting the accomplishments of our Deputy Executive Mayor, MMC for Economic Development and Spatial Planning and Section 79 oversight committee chairpersons for Muncipal Public Accounts Committee, Community Safety Roads and Transport and Utilities, which you can see under the section “Did you know?”
We remain committed to the multi-party coalition’s strategic priorities, including insourcing, inner-city rejuvenation, and immigration, as we await the outcome of the Senate-approved review of our position in City of Tshwane.
EKURHULENI
ActionSA Ekurhuleni was happy to report the successful attempt to have the Executive Mayor of City of Ekurhuleni address crowds of security guards and cleaners that were picketing, demanding to be insourced by the city during an official sitting of council in July.
A letter addressed to the Executive mayor, outlining a programme of action to expedite insourcing in the region succeeded the July picketing of the workers.
In the letter ActionSA asks the city inter alia, that the MMC for Corporate and Shared Services organise a public meeting to update workers on the progress of the programme and where possible the updates to be conducted on a quarterly basis, that the funding model be tabled in the next council meeting in August 2024.
There appears to be a collaborative effort by the ANC-EFF lead government abetted by the DA to frustrate the implementation of insourcing. On 30 August 2024, the council adopted the commissioning of another feasibility study on insourcing, further delaying the process.
ActionSA Ekurhuleni will continue to champion and lead efforts for the city to achieve total insourcing of security guards and cleaners and bring dignity to workers.
