Fixing Gauteng – One Branch, One Region at a Time | Edition No.16 | 04 June 2025
By: Funzi Ngobeni MPL – ActionSA Gauteng Provincial Chairperson

Dear Actioneers,

The past week saw ActionSA table two motions at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. One dealt with addressing dysfunctional traffic lights – that not only pose danger but are also costing commuters over R28 000 annually – and the other sought to affirm the constitutional and legislative responsibilities of MPLs in conducting oversight. Both motions were unanimously passed by the House.
During the Ekurhuleni Budget Speech, the City announced the insourcing of cleaners and security officers – a long-standing demand by ActionSA and a major pro-worker victory we proudly welcome. In the City of Johannesburg, we saw our councillors take a principled stance to vote against the Budget, primarily due to the anti-poor R200 electricity surcharge.

On a very positive note, the launching of branches in Gauteng is continuing with its momentum, with over 50 branches launched within 4 weeks. As we prepare for the 2026/27 Local Government Elections (LGE), this is a giant step towards entrenching strong structures in the province.

We thank our Regional and Constituency leadership as well as activists for the stellar work they have put on the ground to achieve this. We also congratulate our newly elected Chairpersons and look forward to more visibility on the ground.

As ActionSA in Gauteng, our mission remains unwavering. From fixing traffic lights and ensuring accountability on organs of State to fighting for township economic development and upholding the rule of law, we are building a Province that works for all – brick by brick, ward by ward.

  • Approved the transfer of land adjacent to Jubilee Hospital to the Gauteng Department of Health to help improve access to the facility and infrastructure upgrades as well as reduce crime around the hospital.

CITY OF JOHANNESBURG

  • ActionSA Caucus voted against the City’s budget due to the City’s failure to scrap or even reduce the R200 electricity surcharge on grounds of principles and people-centred governance.
  • ActionSA S79 Chairpersons for EISD, Finance and Public Safety visited an informal settlement that is seated atop an Egoli gas line.

The R2.5 million budget cuts to critical road infrastructure are not just numbers on a page; they represent delayed progress and prolonged suffering for residents who already endure daily challenges.

ActionSA believes in a government that puts residents first through ethical leadership, service delivery excellence, and prioritised infrastructure investment. Instead of slashing vital community projects, we advocate for cutting wastef ul expenditure, enforcing accountability, and redirecting funds to where they are most urgently needed-so that every South African can live in a dignified and well-serviced environment.

EKURHULENI

  • Welcomed the insourcing of cleaners and security officers by the City.
