Fixing Gauteng – One Branch, One Region at a Time
By: Funzi Ngobeni MPL – ActionSA Gauteng Provincial Chairperson
Dear Actioneers,

The nation entered the month of July under a dark cloud of grief as the country heard of the passing of former Deputy President, David Mabuza.
To quote ActionSA President, Herman Mashaba’s, statement last week, “While varying reflections on his legacy will no doubt unfold in the days to come, ActionSA simply wishes to extend compassion to his family as they begin this difficult mourning journey. We pray for their strength, peace and comfort during this time of loss.” As ActionSA Gauteng, we note his contributions to South Africa and wish that his family be comforted during this period. May his soul rest in peace.
The Green Umbrella continues its mammoth growth as we welcomed Botho Community Movement (BCM) in the North-West. BCM gives ActionSA two additional councillors – bringing the number of councillors to 26 represented in 13 in North-West municipalities – which will enable our messaging to be further amplified in different communities.
Our Senate had a breakaway session this past weekend to prepare for, amongst other things, the next local government elections. Several issues were discussed and resolutions reached, with some having been referred to provinces for further input from the party’s structures. These inputs and resolutions will be pivotal in mapping our elections approach and strategy, and I call our members to participate in all engagements that will take place.

We continue strengthening our interactions with the grassroots, having launched 83 branches across the province thus far. We’ve seen a huge membership uptake in areas like Johannesburg and Tshwane with smaller regions such as Merafong and RandWest punching above their weight in recruiting new members.

With such positive feedback from the ground, this is a good omen for our vision to FIX Gauteng, establish an accountable, people-centred and service delivery-driven government in Gauteng where residents live safely and with dignity.
As always, my appreciation goes to our Regional and Constituency leadership as well as activists, who continue to tirelessly work the ground. Congratulations go to all newly elected Branch Chairpersons whom I look forward to seeing them working to drive issues affecting their respective communities.
ActionSA remains resolute in our mission. From ensuring accountability in government to providing quality services to residents, we are building a Province that works for all – brick by brick, ward by ward.

  • The Executive Mayor, Dr. Nasiphi Moya, led a follow-up meeting with business stakeholders to resolve water supply issues affecting Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant.
  • Three Tshwane Municipal workers were arrested for allegedly stealing a transformer worth R7 million.
  • 100 cleaners signed their insourcing contracts, further entrenching ActionSA’s commitment to insourcing frontline workers and strengthen in-house capacity as well as providing better remuneration for workers.
  • Pretoria High Court declared the R292 million tender awarded to corruption-accused Edwin Sodi null and void and ordered him to repay the City all profits made from the unlawful contract. This is a major milestone in consequence management and accountability.
  • Launched the extended service hours at the Olievenhoutbosch clinic as a pilot project.
  • Launched the development of the Kruger Park flats. This development will see mixed development for social housing and 1 200 beds for students’ accommodation.
  • The DA conducted a poll asking Tshwane residents their take on the City’s current state. As 80% of respondents indicated that “Things were going well” as opposed to “ANC-coalition is failing” and “DA must take over”, the poll was immediately deleted. This was a demonstration of public trust to the City’s administration led by Dr. Nasiphi Moya, and an affirmation of good governance led by ActionSA.
