Mayor Morero’s Extension of 7-Day Deadline to 3 Weeks is a Tactic to Placate Residents, Not Resolve Their Problems
Press Statement by Marcel Coutriers
ActionSA Joburg Caucus Leader
ActionSA Joburg Caucus notes with deep concern the Mayor’s decision to extend his self-imposed 7-day deadline to deliver on urgent community issues facing the residents of Coronationville and surrounding areas, now stretched to 3 weeks.
This extension is yet another example of how the Mayor is buying time and placating residents with promises, rather than addressing the water crisis. Instead of providing solutions within the timeframe he confidently set, the Mayor has shifted the goalposts, leaving residents frustrated and communities no closer to relief.
For residents, the problems remain immediate and real – whether it be failing basic services, crime concerns, or the lack of infrastructure maintenance. Empty deadlines, extended without justification, only erode trust in leadership and signal a failure to prioritize the urgent needs of the people.
ActionSA believes that leaders must be accountable to the commitments they make. If the Mayor cannot meet a deadline of his own choosing, how can residents trust him to deliver on more complex and long-term promises?
This pattern of delay exposes the Mayor’s approach: placating communities with rhetoric rather than demonstrating the urgency and leadership required to address the challenges they face daily.
The silence of the Patriotic Alliance as well as the Democratic Alliance relating to the affected wards of 69 and 82 is deafening. Residents of the area, particularly Coronationville, must hold accountable those who claim to advocate for them. It’s crucial to distinguish between those who genuinely support the community and those who only appear during election season.
