Mayor Nasiphi Moya Reforms Financial Oversight, Combats Inherited Legacy of Corruption
Press Statement by Michael Beaumont
ActionSA National Chairperson
Dr Nasiphi Moya and her coalition team, through their decisive actions against financial abuse and mismanagement as highlighted in the City’s six-month progress report, have once again shown South Africans that ethical and capable governance is not only possible but must be expected.
On Thursday, ActionSA Executive Mayor Moya emphasised the critical work being done to address corruption, irregular expenditure, and financial mismanagement in our nation’s capital.
The following noteworthy details were shared:
Completion of an investigation into over R11 billion in unauthorised, fruitless, irregular, and wasteful expenditure.
A further R1 billion set to be investigated before the close of the 2024/25 financial year.
Dismissal of 85 officials for offences including bribery, theft, corruption, and misconduct.
900 cases referred to the financial disciplinary board.
Submission of eight company names to the National Treasury for blacklisting.
One case involving a councillor referred to the Speaker of Council.
The progress made is all the more remarkable given the financial state inherited from the previous administration, which included a staggering R13 billion in irregular expenditure. The continued escalation of this figure over recent years, along with the absence of consequence management, has been a major factor in repeated negative audit outcomes.
In a country too often plagued by headlines of politicians and officials escaping accountability while billions go unaccounted for, it is encouraging to see Dr Moya decisively leading the City’s financial turnaround and the implementation of consequence management.
Dr Moya and the multi-party coalition government she leads have demonstrated that accountable governance and a commitment to financial integrity are achievable in our capital. ActionSA continues to support the efforts of the Mayor of Tshwane to ensure that the benefits of good governance, sound financial management, and improved service delivery standards are experienced by all residents of the City.
