Merafong Infrastructure Collapse Worsens – ActionSA Demands Accountability and a Proper Maintenance Plan

ActionSA in Merafong is alarmed by the continued deterioration of infrastructure throughout the municipality and condemns the local government’s persistent failure to implement meaningful, long-term solutions to well-known service delivery issues.

While the sinkhole crisis has rightly received public attention, the broader collapse of infrastructure in Merafong has been downplayed and neglected. Every main access route into and out of the municipality is plagued with hazardous potholes, and internal roads in several wards have become virtually impassable. These deteriorating roads endanger motorists and pedestrians alike, while crippling already struggling local businesses.

In Ward 12, a broken transformer has plunged residents into a prolonged blackout, now entering its second week. The municipality has failed to communicate any clear plan to resolve the outage. Residents have been told to expect a further 11-day wait for power restoration – an unacceptable delay that highlights the municipality’s lack of urgency, coordination, and care.

Even more damning is the failure of the much-publicised “Operation Spush’ iService Delivery” campaign, led and endorsed by the Mayor herself. Despite its grand promises, the campaign has yielded no lasting results. Potholes that were hastily patched have already begun to resurface, revealing both poor workmanship and a lack of proper planning. For a campaign so closely tied to the Mayor’s office, the outcome is nothing short of embarrassing.

ActionSA demands:

  • A full audit of all road maintenance projects executed under Operation Spush’ iService Delivery – including financial costs, contractor details, and an assessment of work durability.
  • A publicly available, comprehensive infrastructure maintenance plan addressing electricity, roads, and sinkhole risks – with clear timelines and measurable deliverables.
  • Accountability from the Mayor’s office, including consequence management for substandard work and ongoing infrastructure failures.

The people of Merafong deserve more than broken promises and quick-fix PR exercises. They deserve reliable, quality infrastructure and a municipality that puts residents first.

ActionSA will continue to amplify the voices of Merafong residents and hold this failing administration accountable every step of the way.
