ActionSA has noted with concern the Auditor-General’s (A-G) report to the standing committee on the A-G’s Standing Committee that the North West Province is one of the provinces that fared the worst, with no municipalities receiving clean audits.
It is high time that the Premier and his government table a comprehensive plan to recuse the province’s municipalities from complete ruin I service to the residents who rely o these municipalities for basic services.
This performance is not surprising considering that the province is on record as having the worst run municipalities in the country.
Tsakani Maluleke’s report shows a continued decline in accountability, poor financial management practices and the deteriorating financial health of North West municipalities.
Our munipalities are failing on almost every major metric of performance, good governance and integrity.
This remains a blight on service delivery and we now have to question if these ANC-run municipalities are able to spend taxpayer’s money responsibly.
It is unacceptable that 20 municipalities spent R126.95 million on consultants who have been proven to be ineffective as their work was not adequately reviewed and there is no record and documentation to prove that they delivered on the work they were paid to do.
We call on the Local Government MEC, Nono Maloyi, to use the R659.2 million budgeted for the 2023-2024 financial year he announced last week, to amongst other things, address the poor financial management practices, failing infrastructure, neglected wastewater treatment plants and poor waste disposal management at these municipalities as a matter of urgency.
We also call on the MEC to ensure that these munipalities fill all senior management positions with qualified people and that corruption is ended at all municipalities.
The people of North West deserve a strong and corruption free government that will be alternative to the failed ANC governance.
